About 5 years ago (before all the kiddos) I managed a 5 Star Italian Restaurant. My husband, then boyfriend treated me to dinner while we were in our “slow” time. I kept noticing all the staff peeking in and out of the weigh station, but they normally did that when management was eating..lol

We had a wonderful dinner and then the Chef came out with the most fabulous Tiramisu. I wasted no time digging in and low and behold I broke my tooth on a ring..the engagement ring! I didn’t know whether to cry or laugh. He got don on one knee and proposed… broken tooth and all I said yes!

I remember one Valentines in particular…. we went and had sushi and then took a walk by the beach. My favorite date! So sweet! I think we should do that again!

  4. Carrie L says:

One Valentine’s Day, I walked by a co-workers desk and admired the beautiful bouquet of flowers she received. A little bit later, the same co-worker sheepishly brought the flowers to me, saying that they were mine and they had been delivered to her by mistake. There was a card attached, but she hadn’t seen it right away. We both laughed, but it probably wasn’t as funny to her since she had to give the flowers away!

I think the Sarah & Abraham valentines are really cute!

  5. Polly says:

It’s not really a funny story I frequently like to share that my birthday is right around Valentine’s Day (Feb 7th) so I always had a Valentine’s themed birthday party growing up and loved that the two were so close together. Of course then in my twenties when I was single and began to be sulky and grumpy about Valentine’s Day, it was a double whammy of being single for my birthday and single for Valentine’s Day a week later. Boo hoo!

  6. Allison Hansen says:

I don’t have any funny stories… Just extremely romantic, gooey, schmoopsey ones!

I love Valentine’s Day! My husband proposed to me on Valentine’s Day, we discovered our first child was a girl on Valentine’s Day, and I discovered I was pregnant with our second daughter on Valentine’s Day!!!

  8. Kelly K. says:

The first Valentine’s day with my husband, we decided to go out to dinner at this fancy place and really go the whole nine yards. That night everyone was served the same thing, a 7 course meal… special for Valentine’s Day. The 7 course meal proved to move slowly and even with reservations at 7, we didn’t get seated for an hour and a half! By then we were STARVING! So they bring out the first course and it’s a plate of appetizers…none of which we can even figure out what they are. My husband and I are both picky eaters, what were we thinking!? We barely ate a thing and hoped the next course would be better…it wasn’t…MUSHROOM soup in a bread bowl. Neither of us like mushrooms, and seeing them pureed into a gray soup didn’t change our minds. We had to torturously sit through each course not eating… waiting for the next one. Then the main course finally comes, at last! Oh, wait…we have to SHARE one thing. Well, I don’t eat meat, and the only thing my husband wanted was the steak, everything else was overly fancy like duck etc. So the waiter now feeling bad for us, noticing we aren’t eating makes and exception and we get the steak and the vegetarian meal. The problem with the vegetarian meal is it’s really weird and has lots of eggplant in in…which I also don’t like. We vowed never to do that again, and now we cook at home on Valentine’s day. :)

My ‘funny’ Valentine story is that a year ago I got a new puppy–Sophie–and so I spent all my Valentine’s Day trying to stop her from tearing my house apart and going to the bathroom on my new carpeting! A year later, she is now well-trained (i.e. potty trained!!!). Our relationship is still going strong :)

  12. Marta says:

When my (now) husband and I were dating in college he gave me large green stuffed frog for Valentine’s Day, and I immediately fell in love with that frog. However, we could never decide on a name. The frog still lives with us, and sometimes we joke about me cuddling with the frog when Ricky is not available for cuddling.

  13. Michelle says:

I met my husband on Valentine’s Day… It was a blind date. All of the restaurants we wanted to go to had a very long wait – so we ended up at Lonestar, (which was not our first choice). We then went back to my dorm room and broke a few rules with out beverages of choice. I remember that he had on the most hideous socks I had ever seen… and as soon as we were serious enough for me to get a vote… they were trashed!

  14. Angie says:

I think my most memorable one was the very first that my hubbie (then boyfriend) arranged. Huge balloon bouquet was to be delivered to the university I was in school at, but they said it would be too big, so it had to be deilvered to my home. He was os disappointed not to be able to show it off, but I loved it!

  15. Peter says:

Thank you for all your awesome entries.. Piper & I will have to tell our stories too!

  16. Megan says:

I don’t know if it was funny then, but it is now. 6 years ago on Valentine’s day my boyfriend said we would go out to dinner but keep it simple and just exchange cards. He forgot that he had a group meeting that evening so we had to do something quick (we ate in at the take-out chinese plance in town). While we were eating our dinner with plastic forks, he said he forgot to get a card and that his group meeting would be late but would I mind waiting outside for him. I did….so that he could set everything up for his proposal!

  17. My funny valentine story really is about my mother. Growing up I lived in a small town. My father was a physican and our last name was Moore. We also had a Vet in our town with the same last name – so there were two Dr. Moores’. My mother sent my father a special something from the florist with a note attached for only my father’s eyes. The valentine got sent to the wrong Dr. Moore. Needless to say, when the animal doctor – Dr. Moore – called my mother to “thank” her for his valentine my mother was mortified. :)

The most fun my hubby and I ever had on Valentine’s Day was when we competed to see who could buy the tackiest gift. I won b/c I got us matching airbrushed t-shirts!

  19. Amanda says:

My husband (then-boyfriend) and I had been dating for about 5 years and went on a really, really awkward double date that was a first date for the other couple. The Italian restaurant was really packed with loving couples and a violin-player stood by them forever, serenading them. It was so awkward, but we still laugh about it!

  20. Kelly says:

Last year my lovely boyfriend made dinner all by himself and then as we were about to dine his friend Joey showed up. Turns out Joey had no plans and my bf felt bad and invited him. I think maybe you had to be there?
    Hahaha!

  22. Claire says:

Unfortunately I don’t have any good Valentine’s day stories! But my favorite quote comes from Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, “I didn’t care what it’s all about. All I wanted to know was how to live in it. Maybe if you found out how to live in it you learned from that what it was all about.”

  23. Amy says:

All of my Valentines stories are romantic so I will have to go with a favorite saying:
“To blessed to be stressed and to anointed to be disappointed!” No idea where it came from but I love it!

  24. Ok. Two years ago, my Husband and I deceided to take our 2 yr old son out to eat with us at this fancy restaurant that we ate at every valentines day. We were sooooo nervous that our son would act up. We asked to sit in the way back. All throughout dinner my son was an angel. My Husband and I not so good!!! We dropped a plate and broke it, I spilt my drink all over the table and myself. We looked very very silly!!!! Havent been back sence!!!!

I made a chocolate pie for my valentine one year when I was in highschool. I bought a “ready to fill” pie crust. Since it was ready to fill, I just filled it with the chocolate pudding pie filling and served it… raw! My valentine took the first bite, and tried to be polite, but needless to say, we didn’t have dessert that night.

  28. Annie Shaw says:

My hubby tried to romance me one year by having a picnic with yohoo’s in wine glasses. It was so sweet…until he decided to “have a talk”. He asked, “How can I encourage you to be a better housewife? I really would like the dishes done.” The picnic stunk afterwards, and he now uses this as an illustration of HOW NOT TO DO VALENTINES. lol

In high school to raise money for the choir group, people could pay to have a group of our high school boys sing you a love song during class. val-a-grams. Once all 6 boys came into class and sang one to me and instead of being from your boyfirend or secret admirer, it was from my dad! Cute now but horrible then!

  31. Heidi Kratzke says:

My most hilarious Valentine’s Day story was the year I forgot it was Valentine’s Day at all! I was in college and I guess I was just so busy that I forgot. Luckily my boyfriend (now husband), didn’t seem to mind so much– I think it just took off a lot of the pressure for him! We ended up celebrating the next day, and joke about it every year.

Our very first valentine’s day together I was so nervous – that I changed my mind about going out to eat. I was so scared that I would throw up lol…but after the movie I decided I was finally hungry. We ended up having McDonalds chicken nuggets for our first vday together :)

  36. Cerise says:

Not really a funny Valentine story…but it’s my favorite. Very early Valentine’s Day morning 2008, after trying several months for a baby (and losing one to a miscarriage). I took a pregnancy test and it tested positive. I hid the positive test in Hubby’s Valentine’s Day card and put it by the coffee maker for him to find when he woke up. I was so excited when I crawled back into bed I was shaking and he thought I was crying. It was the best gift I’ve ever gotten or given on Valentine’s Day. In October 2008 I gave birth a healthy and very happy baby boy.

  37. Alana says:

My favorite Valentine’s Day story is not my own, but my dad’s….and we hear it every year… when in 5th grade, he sent a valentine to his sweet crush (a little girl in his class) that said, “I really like you but I don’t like your friend Susie very much.” He ended up in the principal’s office!

  38. Megan says:

Every year on Valentine’s Day my husband had a very traditional tradition: he would present me with a dozen long-stemmed red roses. Last year though, I begged him not to spend the money on the roses since their beauty is so temporal. What he came up with instead was even better…He made a dozen oragami roses out of $1 bills and created a money bouquet for me to spend as I wished.
    He’s a keeper. :D

    i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

One V-day when I was little my mother gave me one of the those heart-shaped chocolate boxes. I was so excited to have a whole box of chocolate to myself! (I have four younger siblings). When I opend the box though all that was left was the little paper wrappers. I was so upset. My mother came over and remarked that she thought my brothers and sisters had left me something. I threw a tantrum about how they never left me anything! Then I looked back into the box and in three of the paper wrappings were little rings. My mom then told me that she thought her oldest deserved more than just candy.

    This more cute than funny.
When I was a teenager my first serious boyfriend would sent my flowers on all occasions.
The Valentine’s Day after we broke up my mother spent all morning ‘comforting’ me over the fact that I wouldn’t be receiving any flowers that year.
Then the bell rang and a florist delivery man stood outside with a single red rose.
My best friend hadn’t wanted me to feel left out so he sent me a rose.

  48. Mandy says:

While this isn’t a funny story, it is my favorite V day story to tell. I am a single mom with three little girls ages 7, 8 and 10. I have been dating the same man for about 6 years but up until 3 years ago I was pretty noncomittal for fear of getting hurt and my girls getting hurt in the process. It was about 8 o’clock in the evening on Valentine’s Day when I realized I hadn’t talked to him all day so I called him. He said “Wow, I was just about to call you… I am on your porch”. When I went downstairs to let him in he greeted me with a dozen roses and a box of chocolates. But the real kicker is that he had roses and candy for each of my girls too. In the card it said “Will you be my valentine?” and he wrote in…all of you. I melted, I caved, I crumbled, and I love him more and more each day.

My Valentine story is this- Recently my mother had passed away and upon going thru her things I found a Valentine card she kept of mine that was sent to me in grade school some 45 yrs ago from a little girl in my classroom named Laura. I know this girl and have been in contact with her recently I found that neat. The Valentine said- Hey Valentine you really register with me, it had a cash register on the front, very cute, they dont make Valentines like that anymore.

  63. Judy says:

The first Valentine’s Day I spent with my college boyfriend went from kind of disappointing to quite memorable in one afternoon. He gave me a lovely dozen red roses. And no card. No Valentine. He could tell something was bothering me, so, in my oh-too-honest fashion, I told him. On Valentine’s Day, your girl needs a card. Sounds basic, but it’s kind of a given, right? : ) So, he went to work for the evening. And late that night, he came home with the biggest Valentine I’d ever seen — a poster board covered with cut-out hearts pasted all over and words of love scrawled across it. We’ve been together now for 14 years.

An ex of mine tried to make a chocolate heart for me for Valentine’s day and within it, he had placed a poem he wrote for me. He left it on the car seat during the day, causing it to melt. When he picked me up, I didn’t realize it was there and ended up sitting on it! It looked nothing like a heart so I freaked out and thought I had sat on poop! My dress was ruined and the chocolate “heart” was one big mess.. but it was still a sweet attempt.
